The effects of employment by foreign direct investment(FDI) to the country can be a complex one. The FDI may bring increase of employment directly or indirectly, but it also may bring decrease of employment in the industry or substitute industry of the concerned country. Especially in the developing countries, if the local companies with labor intensive production system became less competitive to the foreign companies with technology intensive production system and were forced to get out of the market, the decrease of employment shall be much bigger than expected. Many countries usually regard the increase of employment of importance among FDI's effects to their economy. But even though China achieved a high growth of economy through attraction of FDI by adopting reform and market opening policy, they couldn't achieve the increase of employment close to that of economy. This study analyzed empirically the effects of FDI to China's employment during the year 1992~2008. When we analyzed the results by the period of before or after China's WTO joining, the FDI contributed much to the creation of China's employment in the former period, but the effects in the latter period has no statistical significance. And according to the results of regional analysis, we can see a decrease of employment by FDI in the Eastern region but an increase in the central region.
